New Wines Released Today! 2011 Chardonnay and Winemaker’s Red

We are excited to be able to share two new releases with you!

Our 2011 Chardonnay and 2011 Winemaker’s Red are available for purchase in our tasting room, and will be available on our website soon. Our ’11 Chardonnay has had a reputation for receiving hugs (as you may have seen on our Facebook page) its been enjoyed greatly by staff and media. And, our ’11 Winemaker’s Red is a very exciting blend that is unique and different from our 2010 vintage. Its depth of flavor and smooth finish are marvelous, and it will continue to “reward those that are patient”, as this one is a great addition to any cellar.

We’re REALLY excited to share that the 2011 Winemaker’s Red just won a Gold Medal at the 2013 Pacific Rim Wine Competition! This is a HUGE honor for a Michigan red matched up against those west coast reds!

We look forward to being able to pour these for you!

2011 “Naked” Chardonnay - $16

A marvelous pairing with Lake Michigan Whitefish or Maryland crab cakes, this brightly balanced wine is bottle-aged for one year after its time in stainless steel barrels. Silver Medal – Finger Lakes International Wine Competition

2011 Winemakers Red - $24

A blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot, this wine is a delight by itself and the perfect companion to BBQ ribs, grilled meats and food with rich sauces. Soft tannins are created as its aged for 12 months in barrels that combine Appalachian and French oak. Unusual, but highly delicious, wine pairing suggestions

Recently, the question came to us “What are some food pairings that one wouldn’t typically think of when they’re tasting your wines?” Sounds like a challenge. We loved digging around and trying to come up with some atypical pairings with Blustone wines that were tasty and surprising. Here are a few!

2011 Ad-Lib w/ Sloppy Joe’s

Ad-Lib is what we call a “Casual Red Wine” and as such has a lot of fun and relaxed qualities you might not find elsewhere. It is semi-sweet with a bit of residual sugar which you can taste right away that yields it to some of our favorite comfort foods. In this case, w/ Sloppy Joe’s it’s perfect! The touch of sweetness compliments the sweet flavors of the sauce and it’s mild acidity and tannins will blend well with the casual meal. Actually…pair this with anything that would scare off most wines and watch the magic: burgers and pizza are favorites.

2011 Riesling w/ Grilled Cheese

Grilled Cheese paired with the Dry Riesling. Well here’s a surprise. Our Dry Riesling is full of varietal characteristics meaning deliciously fruit forward with a dry finish. What’s really interesting is you detect sweetness in the wine from the fruit character although theres 0% residual sugar. This quality makes it perfect for mild to sharp cheeses and we discovered, grilled cheese as well! The dryness of this wine paired with its bouquet of fruit flavor compliments the grilled cheese in the same way a side of apples or pears might.

2010 Pinot Noir w/ Chocolate and Peanut Dipped Bananas

Pinot Noir for dessert? Another surprise, our Pinot Noir has lots of characteristics from the surrounding soil/cherry farm meaning it starts with vanilla and under it are tones of deep cherry and raspberries. Imagine bananas, chocolate, peanuts, vanilla, cherries and raspberries mixed together…you might as well have a fruit ice cream sunday dessert! Break Pinot Noir out of its mold and try it with this dessert and you’ll be surprised what this little wine can do.

Caramelized Onion and Apple Tart Recipe

Here is the recipe for the Caramelized Onion and Apple Tart that we served at Toast the Season 2012! Several of you asked if we could share it so we thought we’d post it to the website. We paired the tart with either our Dry Riesling or Late Harvest Riesling depending on sweetness preference. The 2011 Dry Riesling has 0% Residual Sugar but carries the natural fruit flavors of the grape to make it really nice balance to the tart. The 2011 Late Harvest Riesling on the other hand has 3.5% Residual Sugar through a process where we add in sweet reserve nectar from the grapes to give the wine a sweetness that really slaps around your taste buds. Caramelized Onion and Apple Tart

2 Tablespoons Olive Oil
2 Medium Sweet Onions, sliced
2 Red Apples, cut in small slices
Salt
2 Sheets Frozen Puff Pastry
1/2 Cup Sour Cream

Heat oven to 400 degreees. Heat the oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until soft and golden brown, 12 to 15 minutes. Stir in the apples, 1/4 teaspoon salt and cook until just tender.

Place each sheet of pastry on a parchment-lined baking sheet and prick all over it with a fork. Spread with the sour cream, leaving a 1/2-inch border. Top with the onion mixture and bake until crisp and brown, 30 -35 minutes. Cut into pieces before serving.
